Slogan and Mission Statement

• What is your company’s slogan and  mission statement?  How do you want to use design to communicate information, market products, and help clients? What style, attitude, and creative thought will your company offer?    

• To help you develop a mission statement, visit the Design Directory and read mission statements from 5 different companies.  They can usually be found in the ABOUT section of the websites for the companies. Leave a comment on the class blog with the most effective mission statement that you discovered. Copy and Paste it into the comment window.  (graded)

• As a new graphic design company, you will need a slogan and a mission statement.
A slogan is a “short and striking or memorable phrase used in advertising.”
A mission statement is a summary of the aims and values of a company, organization, or individual.”

Brainstorm different slogans and write a rough draft of your company’s mission statement on loose leaf and leave in your class folder to be typed up and presented with your logo. (graded)

Vans Custom Culture

Today we are going to explore our first design 'job' for your graphic design company.  The shoe company VANS has a nationwide contest to design a shoe around a theme.  Today, you will look over the website and look at examples of previous designs.

• Find and save an image of an excellent design to your graphic design folder.
• Download the shoe templates to your computer.
• What theme would you like to design? On the shoe template provided, write down which theme you'd like to design your show around and brainstorm some ideas.  You may start a sketch on the shoe template provided.

Unfortunately, the school only has a total of 8 shoes to work with.  Your design company will be in competition to secure a 'shoe' for the Vans contest and execute the design in paint or marker before the April deadline.  This is an challenge, but also an opportunity for every designer to create an example for their company's portfolio.

Design Company Name

Today you will chose one of your design company names from Lab 8 in a specific font and color.  You will copy and paste that into a new 7" (wide) x 5" (height) document in Illustrator and save that as Project_1 in your design company folder.

Before you do that, visit the Design Directory and go visit one of the design companies that caught your eye.  Try and find a .GIF or .JPEG graphic of the company name and logo if available.  Hold CTRL and click on the graphic to SAVE it to your design folder or desktop.  If you do not like the way the company designed their name, browse some of the other company websites and find one that you think is a good example.

Intro to Typography

The first step of developing our graphic design companies will be to finalize the name of your company.
The area of design that involves type that we need to study is called typography.  Before we begin designing our company name in Illustrator, let's take a brief look at the basics of typography.

Instead of answering questions, such as "What is the difference between Serif and Sans-Serif type?"
Try and define each of the following in your own words or by quoting the document, but your definitions need to be 1 - 2 sentences.  Do not copy entire paragraphs.  We need short definitions that we can add to or clarify later on.  You can COPY and PASTE the terms below into Microsoft Word and define them there.  You will save your work as GD_Vocabulary_yourname.  We will be using your definitions in future typography labs.  Please save this document in the folder you created on computer on Friday.

Principles of Design


Lab 6

How can we add another principle of art to repitition to create a composition using some of the shape and color tools we learned over the last two days?  

•Create a 5” x 5” square in Adobe Illustrator and create a solid color GROUND and start with a single shape of a different color.  How can you use COPY and PASTE and ONLY color differences to suggest MOVEMENT, RHYTHM, PATTERN, or VARIETY?  See principles of design link for definitions of the terms.

Lab 4 - Line

How can you use line, stroke color, and a background color with the idea of repetition to create a simple 5" x 5" design in Adobe Illustrator?  What principles of design do you think involve repetition?

Research Review

Yesterday, students explored a directory of Graphic Design companies that currently do work in New York City.  We will take a brief look at some of the companies that students said 'stood out'.  We'll take a look at what makes them noticeable, what kinds of services they offer, clients that they have worked for, and some of their actual products.

After we take a look a look at some of the designs, you can get your computer and try and leave a comment if you were absent yesterday.  If you'd like to finish answering the questions for full credit, Leave a new comment with only the answers you left unfinished, or email me your full set of answers at mr.powhida@gmail.com

Exit ticket: On the sheet of scrap paper, write down 1 - 2 names quickly, without thinking very much, of what you would call your OWN graphic design company.  Place it in your folder
